Is DDT insecticide?Safety measures: There was suggestive evidence of adverse liver effects, no other adverse effects were observed when tested on human beings. Occupational contact to DDT was associated with reduced verbal attention, visuomotor speed and sequencing and with increased neuropsychological and psychiatric indications in a dose-response pattern per year of DDT application in retired workers aged 55–70 years. Although DDT concentrations were not determined as they probably were very high in poison. DDT is moderately to a little toxic to mammals. The sensitive oral LD50 ranges from 113-118 mg/kg in rats, 150-300 mg/kg in mice, 300 mg/kg in rabbits, 500-750 mg/kg in dogs and >1,000 mg/kg in sheep and goats. DDT is less poisonous to test animals exposed via the skin. The acute dermal LD50 for womanly rats is 2,510 mg/kg. DDT is categorized by the World Health Organization as Class II moderately hazardous. It largely affects the central and peripheral nervous systems and the liver. Sensitive effects in humans exposed to low to moderate levels may include nausea, diarrhea, and increased liver enzyme activity, irritation of the eyes, nose and throat. At higher doses, tremors and convulsions are possible. Deaths from contact to DDT are rare. Even in increasing countries there have been few reported cases, particularly when compared with organophosphate insecticides. Chronic effects: DDT has originated chronic effects on the nervous system, liver, kidneys and immune systems in experimental animals. Dose levels at those effects were observed are at very much higher levels than those which can be typically encountered in humans. Though they may be at or even below, levels found in body fat. |
